It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Endre Kanizsay, Honorary University Professor, a distinguished Hungarian scholar in agricultural economics and international development, who died on 10 August 2025.
Professor Kanizsay’s life was dedicated to scientific work, international cooperation, and the advancement of agricultural development in Africa and the Middle East. Over the course of his career, he conducted research and provided consultancy services in more than fifteen countries, including managing the pilot farm of the Jebel Marra Project in Sudan, as well as undertaking FAO and UNDP assignments from Brazil to Eritrea.
He earned his degrees and scientific titles at Szent István University and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, specialising in agricultural development in Sudan, among other topics. As a teacher and researcher, he shaped agricultural higher education for decades, becoming a prominent figure at several institutions – including Pannon University of Agricultural Sciences, Eszterházy Károly College, Szent István University, and Óbuda University.
During his international career, he represented Hungary as Agricultural and Economic Counsellor in Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Norway, significantly contributing to successful cooperation between Hungary and the Nordic countries. He played a key role in the work of the African–Hungarian Union and the United Nations Association of Hungary, and was a frequent lecturer, organiser, and advisor at numerous international conferences.
His academic work was marked by unwavering commitment to agricultural development and sustainable food security. His lectures and publications made lasting contributions in the fields of global challenges, the Millennium Development Goals, the future of family farming, and international agricultural policy.
Students, colleagues, and friends bid farewell to an authority who set an example not only in science but also in human relationships. His memory will be cherished with respect and affection.
