Our Phd Student’s field work in Uganda

Our doctoral student Richárd Schneider, as part of his research, which concerns among others the opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence during United Nations’ post-conflict missions, conducted field work in Kampala, the capital of Uganda between 03.24. and 04.05. Due to diplomatic assistance, he was given the opportunity to visit the local headquarters of the UN (Pulse Lab Kampala) and made an expert interview with its representatives regarding their AI-powered programs developed for preventive and monitoring purposes.

He also built professional relations at Makerere University when having discussions with the Dean and the Head of Department of the School of Social Sciences.

All his field experiences will be published in a scientific article co-authored by his supervisor, the head of the Africa Research Institute and former MINURSO peacekeeper János Besenyő, and published by Springer.

New book: ‘The Handbook of African Intelligence Cultures’ edited by Ryan Shaffer

Our colleagues in the African Institute have contributed to this book by wiriting 6 chapters.

Bringing together a group of international scholars, The Handbook of African Intelligence Cultures provides the first review of intelligence cultures in every African country. It explores how intelligence cultures are influenced by a range of factors, including past and present societal, governmental and international dynamics. In doing so, the book examines the state’s role, civil society and foreign relations in shaping African countries’ intelligence norms, activities and oversight. It also explores the role intelligence services and cultures play in government and civil society.
