The Doctoral School on Safety and Security Sciences
The Doctoral School on Safety and Security Sciences (BDI) was established in 2012 by Prof. Dr. Zoltán Rajnai and subsequently accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee (MAB). The School’s mission is to train internationally competitive engineering and scientific researchers who transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries and creatively apply their knowledge to address real-world industrial research and development challenges.
At BDI, the lines between previously distinct scientific disciplines are deliberately blurred. Through a project-oriented mindset and interdisciplinary collaboration, the School creates a unique “Safety and Security Knowledge Polygon” that serves as a foundation for innovation and applied research.
Community building is at the heart of BDI. The regular BDI Doctoral Meetings are not only a forum for students and researchers to exchange ideas, but they also serve as Alumni Meetings, where graduates, active doctoral students, instructors, and industry partners can meet, network, and present their research results.
These events foster a vibrant and inspiring academic community in which past, present, and future scholars collectively shape the future of safety and security sciences.
BDI Alumni
Parallel to this, the BDI Alumni Network plays an increasingly important role. Alumni – those who have completed their doctoral studies – actively support current doctoral candidates by sharing expertise, industry insights, and research experience. Through mentoring, knowledge exchange, and joint initiatives, a strong link between alumni and active doctoral students is forged, benefiting both sides: alumni contribute to the School’s scientific and industrial reputation, while current students gain invaluable experience and professional connections.
BDI is thus much more than a doctoral programme – it is a living, expanding professional community where past, present, and future scholars collectively shape the future of safety and security sciences.
How to Join the Alumni Network
- Hungarian graduates: Please contact Dr. Dániel Tokody, who coordinates the Hungarian alumni members.
- International graduates: Please contact Dr. Yue Wu, who is responsible for the international alumni members.

There are 118 graduate students. Career paths interview invitations in progress.
Placement after obtaining the PhD degree
With a PhD degree from the School on Safety and Security Sciences, graduates can find employment in a wide range of fields, both nationally and internationally. Almost 40% of doctoral graduates stay in academic field. They either become university lecturers or researchers in higher education institutions and research institutes, or consolidate their existing active position in this field. Others use their knowledge in the competitive sector, for example in research and development (R&D), engineering innovation or the defense industry. There are also opportunities in the public sector, for example as a policy analyst, government researcher or in international organisations. A PhD opens up a wide range of opportunities for continuous development and professional fulfilment.
